The FREI Family arrives from Hungary

For whatever reasons, Josef and Julianna Frei decided to leave Futog, Hungary - the place the Frei family had known as home for at least a century, possibly more. They arrived at Ellis Island on May 17, 1911 aboard the ship Barbarossa sailing from Breman, Germany.

A curious fact is that every document pertaining to Josef's family, from birth and marriage records to immigration papers from Ellis Island spelled the family name as Frey, yet most papers signed by Josef in Michigan used Frei, the historical spelling of the family since its appearance in Church records of the Catholic Church of Futag. I suspect the change was to reclaim his family's German heritage after having had to deny that heritage for most or all of his life in Futog because of persecution there.

The photo below is said to have been taken upon arrival at Ellis Island. It depicts Julianna and Josef along with children Anna, George and Frank.
