Owen and Sarah Jane (Severance) Teeple family
Owen F. Teeple was born at Vittoria, Ontario
about September 5, 1846. His parents were Alexander Teeple and Mary Ann Winter, both born near the
same place. Owen's family had lived on the same land since 1814 after Alexander's father, Luke, was
released from a prisoner of war camp in New Jersey after the War of 1812 ended. Luke's father was
Peter Teeple, a Sargeant in the King's American Dragoons during the American Revolution (as we call it on
this side of the border.) Read more about Peter Teeple at www.teeple.org
Owen's father died in 1857 in a freak accident. He had been trying to bury a large rock in his field
by digging a deep hole next to it, but the rock dislodge prematurely and crushed him. Owen learned
the family business - his father and grandfather were both tanners. Owen practiced that trade only
in the winter, as he worked as a merchant mariner on the Great Lakes for 6 seasons.
Owen married Sarah Jane Severance on January 18, 1875. They moved to Michigan and settled in
Sanilac County south of Sandusky where they purchased a 160 acre farm (SE 1/4 of Section 13, Town 11N,
Range 13E)on May 13, 1878. Their oldest daughter, Mary Etta - usually called Meta, married Frank
Russell on December 2, 1898. Frank and Meta's second child was Fares Wilton Russell - the one who married
Anita Wolff and . . . you probably know the rest of this story! If not, ask Grandma Nancy Frei -
Fares and Anita were her parents. (Note: 'Fares' is pronounced like 'Ferris')
